This was natural because, although at the time he had discovered the functioning of the transference, he was considering it only to be a nuisance or an impediment and was making no effort to analyse it, even as a resistance. In the case of the Rat Man, Freud analysed the transference and its evolution for its own sake, but never considered it the premier method of psychoanalysis as we do today. The dream is short; I would like to present it as a unit: "The house was on fire. My father was standing by my bed and woke me up.

You will recall that this is essentially a dream in which he meets this patient, Irma, who complains to him that his treatment of her has not succeeded, and he replies that it is her own fault because she has not accepted his solution, and there follow various interactions between her and his friends Otto and Leopold, who examine her. It is of special interest that this dream is presented as an example of the method for interpreting dreams, and is preceded by a preamble in which Freud specifically abandons what he calls the 'popular' methods: that is the use either of inspiration or of decoding.

This latter was seen as certain to be perceived as a mutilation, in boys and girls alike. Only with the analysis of the Rat Man did a purely internal conflict (between love and hate) take its place as a source of castration anxiety, and again in the M'olf Man (between masculinity and femininity). This simple view of the relation of perversions to neuroses characterised Freud's theory until the Wolf Man revealed to him something of the complexity of perversity; how it was compounded of ambivalence, sado-masochism, fetishistic trends and passivity, all generating regression of the libido to pregenital points of fixation.
