But there was just so much to do: the vegetable garden, the chickens and geese and ducks, the writing that paid the bills. We kept putting the house off. Every year, as stuff piled up around us—kneehigh, hip-high, waist-high—we’d say, “Next year. ” But by 1995, we knew there was no next year. We had to have more room.
