James Strachey et al. 59. 16. , Eros and Death] proceed the phenomena of life which are brought to an end by death. . We are not asserting that death is the only aim of life; we are not overlooking the fact that there is life as well as death. ” Freud, New Introductory Lectures, 107. He finds it ”incomprehensible,” he tells us unabashedly, “that the thought of the transience of beauty should interfere with our joy in it”: A flower that blossoms only for a single night does not seem to us on that account less lovely. Nor can I understand any better why the beauty and perfection of a work of art or of an intellectual achievementshould lose its worth because of its temporal limitation. 58 Freud’s efforts to enjoin his disillusioned audience toward a love of the transient, however, fall on deaf ears.
The death of a loved one is that by way of which the great ”battle of the giants” emerges concretely in the life of the mind. Accordingly, it is also that which propels the cultural “lullaby” aimed at forgetfulness. This centrality of the category of the death of loved ones in Freud’s theory of culture requires elaboration. To begin with, it is important to note that the fundamental contradiction to be analyzed is located in the psyche itself, not between the psyche and civilization. The problem of civilization is not that it imposes itself externally on a unitary psyche that needs to be repressed if it is to survive.
