Thomas Crapper (1836–1918), a plumber born in Thorne in south Yorkshire, was not the sole inventor of the flushing toilet, but he did most to advance and improve it.

Many Yorkshire towns have links with places of similar size in France or Germany, but others have been a bit more ambitious in their twinning, seeking out partners as far north as Alaska and as far south as the Falkland Islands. In keeping with its industrial heritage, many of the newer twinning arrangements have been with the new manufacturing powerhouses of China and eastern Europe. This is not an exhaustive list, and towns may have more twinning arrangements than are listed, but these are some of Yorkshire’s more interesting twins or partners.
