An academic colleague, as I wrote this book, reminded me of this—that even as far back as 1960 he attended rallies in Tahrir that were meant to express support for then-Egyptian leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser. The occasion was Nasser’s return from the United Nations, and even those of the fellahin (country provincials) seemed to have a sense of Nasser’s achievements on the world stage. â•… Nevertheless, the protests did not begin at Tahrir Square. Their first focal point was in front of the most hated building in Egypt, the Ministry of Interior, which oversaw, and continues to oversee, the police force.

That was true of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces when it ruled Egypt from the front; it was true of Muhammad Mursi when he was a president for a time; and it will be true for all those in authority. Indeed, it sometimes applies to criticising those who have momentary physical power—or ideational power, as did the ‘revolutionary trend’ of 2011 and onwards—but those with material capacity and power must always take precedence in this regard. â•… But beyond this calling, and my role as an analyst in Western think tanks, the perspective that permeates the following pages is that of an entrenched witness, on whom the revolution had a profound effect.

Still, the cards remained stacked against an independent press: state media maintained an upper hand on licensing and publishing production, while the businessmen behind Egypt’s new media ventures never structured them as sustainable and independent money-making enterprises. 15 â•… This is all to say that while new media was no doubt vital to the making of the revolution, it too came with ingrained limitations. 16 Indeed, a Gallup poll showed that only 8 per cent of the Egyptian population at large got their news from Facebook or Twitter in early 2011—social media was not then, nor is it now, the core information medium for the average Egyptian.
