Example text

When you write an essay, you too become an expert explaining a WRITING 43 complex subject in which you are deeply interested, and your tutor, reading that essay, becomes a student. The examiner who awards you high or low marks for that essay is responding not to what you have learnt but to what you can teach. The real reason for learning to write in your own voice is because there is a reader out there who does not yet know what you have to say, and who wants to hear it. Words, plain and lacy There used to be a firm of Brighton solicitors called Plane and Lacey.

Instead of doing any of these things, you should find something that you want to say about the text—a discussion of its use of nature imagery; or of its response to the problem of evil; or of its satirical representation of polite society; or of the political significance of the conflict between its two central characters. Arguing your case will then be a question of arranging what you have to say in the order that makes it most effective. Think carefully about this before you start writing, but stay open to the possibility of changing the structure of the essay if new and interesting ideas occur to you while you are writing it.

Nor is it necessary to write a rough draft unless you actually find it helpful. If you prefer to polish each sentence or paragraph as you go along, then do it like that. Above all, never start tinkering about with a perfectly satisfactory essay in the belief that because you wrote it easily it must be a first draft and not the thing itself. Arguing a case In order to argue a case, you need to have a case to argue. You cannot construct a well-argued essay by taking notes from half a dozen critical books and a lecture or two and then reconstituting those notes (suitably acknowledged) into a piece of continuous prose, and neither can you do it by simply sitting down and writing anything that comes into your head about the text in the order in which it occurs STRUCTURE 37 to you.
