I have given up writing “articles,” having discovered that my vocation lies in other paths. In fact entre nous, I expect to be writing books for some time to come’ (L, 2: 431), she replied. And she stuck to her word. Unlike most of her contemporaries both male and female, who juggled reviewing with the writing of fiction, anxious not to ignore any income stream in a precarious professional life, she had set her mind to writing fiction, and consciously turned her back on journalism. When in 1858 John Blackwood advised against publishing a preface she had prepared for Adam Bede, he asked Figure 3 The first (anonymous) publication of Scenes of Clerical Life, in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, January 1857.

Her choice of subject suggests that she might have now been toying with writing a novel of her own. In November 1856 Lewes sent thirty-seven-year-old Marian’s first story to John Blackwood, the Edinburgh publisher whose family firm produced the eponymous monthly magazine to which Lewes regularly contributed scientific articles. Blackwood liked ‘The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton’, taking on trust Lewes’s cover story that it was written by a George Eliot’s life 7 shy, implicitly male, friend who wished to conceal his identity.

She finished her story ‘The Lifted Veil’ at the end of April 1859 and in June sent Blackwood 110 pages of what would become The Mill on the Floss. He declared himself ‘perfectly delighted’ with it (L, 3: 88). The title was his suggestion. Once again the question of serialisation was raised. In proposing that Adam Bede be published in the expensive three-volume format both Lewes and George Eliot knew they were risking the advantages that exposure in a serial would bring, all the more important as sales of Scenes had been disappointing.
