Either way, for two weeks the remainder of the expedition waited for their commander to return and searched for a wreck. Only much later did they learn he had been blown too far off course to return to New Jerusalem, ultimately turning east and returning safely to Peru. After these two weeks de Torres took charge. With continued hostility from Islanders, notable tremors in the earth, and no commander, it seemed time to quit their settlement on what later turned out to have been Espiritu Santo, the largest of the islands in Vanuatu, their greatest discovery to date.

From these, along with the descriptions by de Prado and de Torres, it is possible to see some broad elements of New Guinean and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Most of the peoples the Iberians encountered were agriculturalists. Drawn by de Prado as an ordered landscape of hut groups and crop fields, clearly carved out between stretches of jungle, the landscape was undoubtedly settled — even if the villages were separated by jungles or shoals.
Over a year after meeting some of the western Australians, Jacques had the opportunity to witness the other side of the continent. The Uranie put into Port Jackson, and Jacques met Governor Macquarie and saw the growing urban settlement of Sydney, with its elegant buildings and gardens, active social scene, busy commercial wharves and labouring convicts. But Jacques could not comprehend why the government allowed Aboriginal Australians to nakedly wander the streets and inhabit the settlement. They drank and danced, carried weapons and rattled fences, and struck each other in the streets.
